Friday Fragment Freewrite Fitness VGNO - Ice Ice Baby School Blues

WooHoo! It's Friday! Since I'm still adjusting to this new sleep/wake schedule (and still having to remind myself that staying up until midnight is really not a good idea when the alarm is set for the ungodly hour of 5:20 a.m.) I pretty much sleep-walked through this week...so I'm thankful that the inimitable Mrs. 4444 has deemed Friday to be the day you can simply purge your brain of all nonsense in one easy post. You can find her and all the other cool sleep-walkers over at Half Past Kissin' Time ...bring your own pillow and join the fun!

The ice maker in our fridge is on the fritz...again. The tubing behind the fridge sprouted a leak not once, but twice, so hubby had to replace it. Twice. It worked fine for a while, but now seems to want to send excessive amounts of water through the ice maker part and cover the contents of the freezer with rivulets and mounds of frozen water. I mentioned it to hubby about a month or so ago and turned off the ice maker. Apparently he turned it back on a couple of days ago, as I got to spend an inordinate amount of time chipping ice rivulets and mounds of ice off the freezer items yesterday. I think it's time for a good nag session. ;)

Rolex (the Sheltie puppy) has had to be introduced to the invisible fence collar this week. We were hoping to stall that mode for a while, since he's still so young and he was being really good about staying in the boundaries of the yard hanging out with Travis and Elvis who both have collars. But we weren't expecting the neighbor dog to lure him into his yard. Several times. And yes, it's the same troublesome Pit Bull that drives me nuts by being in our yard... All. The. Time.

Not only do I not need him leaving piles of his nasty half-runny poop in our yard, but I don't want him talking Rolex into coming over to his house for a midday snack. With Rolex as the potential snack. I've been nice - the pellet gun hubby bought I've used on the Pit Bull, but not actually aimed at him, just near him to scare him off. I think next time I'm going to get me a bullseye. I'm just sayin'.

******************************
Mother Nature blessed us with some awesome weather this week - so I finally got out and yanked all the weeds from the flower bed they'd overrun. I had been leaving them there in case the voles living under there decided they'd pay for their keep by eating them for me, but no suck luck. Now that particular flower bed looks awfully barren, but I figure I won't plant anything there again until next Spring and hopefully by then the voles will have packed up their little suitcases and relocated their families to a better land of opportunity. You know, like the neighbors with the Pit Bull. That'd work.

Sadly Princess Nagger says every day that she hates school. Way different than last year when she had a fun teacher for kindergarten - she loved school last year, and it showed. This year, every morning is a major challenge to get her ready for the bus and to get her on the bus. The bus driver is a sweetheart, she almost didn't pull away one day because Princess Nagger was crying. Me, being the mean mom that I am, said she'd be alright, go ahead and go.

The teacher called the other night - and prefaced the conversation with "This is a courtesy call..." like she was a computer or robot. She was at best cold and stilted on the phone, sounding like she was reading from a script to "See how Princess Nagger is when she gets home from school - is she liking school, not liking school?" So I told her that PN tells me every day that she hates school. She seemed to be a bit taken aback, but only as much as an ice cube is when they're dropped in a glass of fizzy soda. She bobbed around a bit in an attempt to explain to me that the first three weeks will be not as fun as the rest of the year.

Excuse me? I remember when school was the best fun at the very beginning of the year - the teachers always made it fun so you would be hooked for the rest of the year. And of course the end of school was always fun, too, because you were 'winding down' from all that intense learning. So why would first grade be 'not very fun' for the first three weeks? I'm still not sure what to think of her.

I did mention that I got my Criminal Background Check clearance and was waiting for the Child Abuse Background Check paperwork to come back so I could sign up to be a volunteer. Yes, they make you go through all those hoops just to volunteer, but at least it gives the parents peace of mind that the people on the school grounds are, for the most part, legitimate. She told me to send a note with PN when I have my 'clearances' and visitor's badge and she'll 'write me in' on days that are convenient for me. I'll keep you posted.

******************************
My update for Fitness Friday this week is a good one - I was able to rock the Wii EA Sports Active Tuesday through Thursday and have plans to tackle it later this morning. I ignored the Wii Fit for another week - the EA Sports was enough for my tired self. But being able to 'focus' on an actual workout with Princess Nagger in school has been great, and I was able to bid adieu to another 3 lbs this week, even though I was a bad girl with some of my eating habits. While I'm not seeing a significant difference myself, my clothing is starting to get baggy on me, so that makes me happy.

******************************

Princess Nagger Conversation of the Week:

Princess Nagger: "We need to get some PEZ!"

Me: "We do? Why?"

PN: "Hello!! I have a PEZ dispenser, you know! But it's empty. Do they make refills?"

Me: "Of course they do, Silly Goose! What else would you dispense from a PEZ dispenser?"

PN: "I'm finding all kinds of cool things in my room. Some things I forgot all about!"

Me: "It's like finding buried treasure, isn't it?"

PN: "Oh, much better than buried treasure - it's not all dirty from being buried!"

Princess Nagger Attitude of the Week:

Me: "Dispense with the attitude!"

PN: "My dispenser is broken and I'm never getting another one. If I do, I'll sell it on eBay!"

I have to complain because my freezer hasn't been working for over a week! It sucks.

Well, if I ever need to buy an attitude I'll be sure to look on Ebay.

I've never tried the EA Sports you were talking about. I've heard some good things about it from my friends. Maybe I should try it sometime. :D

I love the voles...they are wonderful aren't they? We have gophers here, they are lovely little monsters! Too bad they didn't find buried treasure like PN.

Hopefully your little one will be able to overcome this mis-start.

I hope school gets better for her. I have two 3rd graders and their Open House was last night. I LOVE my daughter's teacher but I'm not so sure about my son's teacher. And he's the one that needs all the help he can get! *sigh*

I have a feeling PN is bored like we talked about. She is already a very fluent reader unlike some of her classmates. She is probably struggling to pay attention to things that she already has learned.

I would approach the school from this angle if you decide to make a call. Ask what else can she learn during the day? What enrichment opportunities are available for her? Has the teacher done anything extra for PN since her phone call like letting her help out even more during the day being the teacher's helper??

My youngest had a very rough kindergarten year due to the above items. His teacher was also an awful uptight bore. I focused not on the school day in the morning but what we were going to do when school was over steering away from talk about school as much as possible.

Jesus! You are busy! I do not trust a pit bull, even the friendliest one can turn, that is just my feeling! I especially do not trust them anywhere near children. There was just a case here of one eating the toes off of a baby. It was just a pit bull puppy! I like a 30/30, I am just saying!!!!

woooooooooow no wonder you daughter hates school. 1st grade teachers are usually the best.. 2nd only to kindergartner teachers. I would see about getting her moved. That's just me.

PN is way funny.. "not all dirty" where do they come up with that stuff?

HAPPY FRIDAY I do hope your ice maker gets fixed soon!

You are a busy bee! I'm sorry PN doesn't like school. I'm dreading the whole thing on Wednesday! God help us all. Caleb will have a horrid teacher. (His other teacher HATED him) Sadly it's true. When she'd call.. I'm just nod my head and say.. OK.

She only liked the girls..and encouraged them more then any of the boys in her class. Mothers of boys would come together and complain!

Sad..

I am sorry your princess is hating school. That is really too bad. Nothing worse than a teacher who is not really engaged. Might be time to talk to the school about alternatives. Happy Friday!

I HATE the Pez candy but damn do I LOVE the dispensers!! The Seinfeld episode with the Tweety Pex dispenser was brilliant!! Ever see it???

I have seen a little more of you in reading your blog- Princess Nagger is a pretty good name! Sounds like a handful! Our youngest son was ADD.. He only argued with me when he was awake... everything was a debate!

I'm just picturing that puppy getting pelleted in the butt and running into the invisible fence. I should NOT be laughing, but I am ;)

PN knows what ebay is!? lol

It's too bad that she is not liking school. I think if a child loves school most of the time, and all of a suddent doesn't, it MUST be the teacher. Seriously. Kids need to clique with their teachers, especially at such a young age. I hope it gets better for her.

Happy FF!

Sorry to hear about the school days. I wonder if someone at the school is not making it fun for her. I hope you have a great weekend.

Love PN's attitude!

That is one smart kid you have there. :) Hopefully the teacher can perk it up a bit and inspire PN.

Do you really like the Sports Active? I got the Golds Gym Cardio Workout but haven't been inspired to try it. You can be my inspiration! :)

I have to say, our ice maker keeps freaking out too! Is it really worth the ice cubes to deal with all of the issues?! I'm beginning to wonder...

I'm sorry the princess doesn't like school this year, but I'm so glad you told the teacher straight out. She sounds like a drag and maybe she needs some people to put her back on the path to helping children love learning.

Those early-elementary teachers are helping to form a child's attitude about school and learning FOREVER. They should be fun and upbeat and kids should LOVE it there.

carma said...

first let me say "happy 2 days to your blogoversary!" I'm sorry to hear PN is hating school this year; we've had years like that and it is tough...Maybe your being there as a volunteer will help.

And about getting up early. UGGGGH...I'm coming to the same conclusion: no more staying up past midnight - boo!

MrsSki said...

I'm sorry that PN is not liking school. I agree...the first couple weeks of school were always the best, getting organized, meeting classmates, playing fun interactive games. If it's not fun now I'm not sure if the teacher will ever get around to fun! I hope so though!!

I've heard that the PTA is like a vacuum...sucking in as many parents as possible!

I enjoyed reading your fragments...the PEZ conversation is priceless. You know there is a PEZ museum somewhere...I just can't remember where!

Ok 5:20 is painful. My son hates school, every...single...day. Makes for a really fun morning doesn't it?

Sometimes puppies need some tough love.

PN sounds like a clever girl. Could she help me out with some stuff I want to sell on ebay? I can't seem to figure it out.

Gena said...

The poor thing! I didn't start hating school until about 7th grade. My son started hating it around 2nd grade. But, you're right, the beginning and end of each school year is usually the best.
Happy VGNO!

I hope school gets better for PN! Maybe now the teacher knows there are issues she'll work on addressing them. *fingers crossed*

Kari said...

I'm sorry your daughter is going through the school issues. When I got to 2nd grade, I was one of those children that hated school and cried every morning - not sure why, I was just a mama's girl, I suppose. I know it's difficult. Hang in there!

Happy VGNO!

1) we don't have an ice maker, I bought "rod" shaped ice cube trays! So i guess they really aren't cubes.
2) I am sorry PN does not like school. I made my final decision to use virtual school for Tara.
3) Congrats on the 3 lbs
4) Wasn't this week awesome. Looking forward to the weekend too
5) I think I'm going to buy some nice purplish mums to plant in our little flower bed!
6) PEZ... we saw a huge display of PEZ dispensers for sale at the Farmer's Market...
7) Buried treasure - LOL - Tara's cleaning her room today!
8) Bad neighbor doggie.

I always love the Princess conversations! Sell it on eBay haha!
I am sorry she is not enjoying school, we are struggling with the changes the school year has brought too. I hope after the 3rd week it does get better for her, maybe the teacher will loosen up?!

Congrats on the weight loss!

And I can't believe you have to go through all that just to volunteer. WOW!

Congrats on rocking the WII!! Awesome.

So sorry to hear that school isn't going over well with PN. Bummer.

We are having some nice weather in GA, too! I'm loving it, but I know there's some hot stuff still out there. I'm so into Fall right now!

Hope you are out enjoying this Saturday!! XO!

That phone call seems suspicious to me. Can't explain why, but it just seems weird. I think you should set up a meeting with the teacher (first) to see why PN hates school. That's absolutely unacceptable to me. There is no reason why a child that young should not be happy in school. Maybe when you volunteer, you'll figure out why. After that, try the principal. I'd get to the bottom of it. That breaks my heart.

That ice would drive me batty. I'd turn it off and get some trays.

Jeez, I'm bossy today... :)

Good job on the weightloss. You're inspiring!

I don't like this whole teacher situation. A child should not have to feel like that when going to school.

I hate those ice sculptures in the freezer! They're awful!

I hope that electronic fence protects your little Rolex. He's just the right size for a snack. Get that gun ready!

Jenners said...

Oh dear ... I'm sorry that the teacher seems to be just as bad as you expected. I hope it gets better. I'm sure it is awful that PN doesn't love school. What a shame.

And I love the conversations you two have.

And I was wondering about that Wii EA Active (or whatever it is called). Do you think it is better than Wii Fit? I find Wii Fit too slow and lots of waiting for everything to stop talking to you.

kyooty said...

can you ask the teacher out right why she thinks that PN doesn't liek school? I havea friend in NJ whose daughter didn't like school after a week, then come to find out later why and it wasn't pretty!

Megan said...

Hahahha!!! Love PN!! I was telling my mom about her the other day. She just cracks me UP!!

Your neighbors dog sounds annoying just like my neighbors dogs. Why can't they all be like OUR dogs, that we actually like? LOL

Wow, PN's teacher sounds just peachy. Hopefully things get better as the year goes on.
